McDonald County Historical Society
by Alberta Anders
The semi=monthly meeting of the McDonald County Historical Society was held, as announced, Sunday, July 18, at the McDonald County Court House in Pineville. The speaker, Bob Evenson, Attorney at Law, entertained and informed a fascinated crowd. Attorney Evenson was introduced by Carol Klein. The presentation included interesting stories around the (2nd) old Court House on the square in Pineville. As Attorney Evenson shared his favorite subject, history, he introduced his mother and then shared a bottle (empty) from "McDonald County territorial, Special Reserve Whiskey." He shared stories about the Dixie Bell Saloon, in McDonald County, talked about his grandfather, Tommy Alexander and explained the circumstances regarding some bonds, issued to help build the court house and described how history saved McDonald County 19 to 20 million dollars, he talked about his first murder case and differences in the law in Missouri, before and following 1980. He described a court house with a different atmosphere as those days a judge could allow smoking which was done, as well as pipes and the need for a spittoon. A different world, he said, no computers, instead, a big docket book and lots of memories regarding the court house building. We learn things about our county from it he said, and we need to keep it and preserve it. He expressed appreciation to Paul Lewis and Joye Helm for their time and energy spent researching bonds from the 1800's in their successful efforts in confirming they had been redeemed and accounted for.
He talked about a time when visas were required to come in to McDonald County (50 years ago) and about his favorite historical character, President Abraham Lincoln. Time flew as he fielded questions and left the crowd asking for more. The next meeting of the Historical Society will be the 3rd Sunday in September at which time we look forward to a presentation by Linda Lindquist Baldwin at which time we will learn about her Belsnickles and the latest happenings with the historic Iron Bridge at Powell Missouri.
You won't want to miss this interesting program. In the meantime, if you have not had a chance to visit the McDonald County Historical Museum at 302 Harmon, please note it is open Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m., www.mcdonaldcohistory.org or www.mcdonaldcohistory.org/museum.htm

Attorney Bob Evenson
McDonald County Historical Society
by Alberta Anders
this Sunday - July 18, Mark your calendar - do! McDonald County Historical Society regular meeting, 2:00 p.m. Sunday at the McDonald County Court House "W" Highway in Pineville. We are excited about the presentation to be provided by the esteemed Attorney, Bob Evenson of Pineville. You won't want to miss Attorney Evenson's interesting and thought-provoking presentation.
Another thing that the Society is looking forward to, we are in the process of putting together the 2011 Calendar. This very popular calendar will have pictures and information regarding the 50th year anniversary of an interesting event in our County. If you haven't heard of 'the secession of McDonald County from the State of Missouri in 1961 you will find this coming calendar especially interesting. Gene Hall, our popular Circuit Clerk of McDonald County recalls when a junior in high school there was a general opinion that the secession was a done deal and Dorothy Beauchamp recalls being stopped at the border of McDonald County and asked to provide proof that she was entitled to enter this "other country". If you have pertinent information to this unique happening in our area, you will probably want to contact the McDonald County Historical Museum Curator, David Sparlin and exchange information/memories,photos.
The Museum is at 302 Harmon Street in Pineville, immediately south of the U. S. Post Office. Hours at the museum are Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and Saturday, 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. If you have not had an opportunity to browse through this museum, formerly the 'Old Sheriff's Home', you have missed out on one of the more interesting things to do this summer. Interesting facts, publications, pictures and historical implements relating to our local homes, businesses, happenings are on exhibit. Check out our Web Page: www.mcdonaldcohistory.org or www.mcdonaldcohistory.org/museum.htm.

McDonald County Historical News for 6 May 2010
by Alberta Anders
So Many People to thank for all their contributions and for the volunteers who give up their personal time to keep the doors open in the museum. I am grateful to Gene Hall, John Hobbs, to United Way and to Fred Lamb and for Bill Gibbs and his grandsons for all their hard work in sprucing up the museum and providing and putting up the rails in the oldest court house. If you haven't had a chance to view the old log court house, do take time to drive down Harmon Street, between the court house and the jail and take note of the authentic rail fence - the donated time and hard work is obvious to all who pass by. Our membership is increasing and the sale of the calendars and the Sturgis books are still ongoing. You will want to mark your calendar this month and not miss the semi-monthly meeting to be on Sunday, May 16 at 2:00 p.m. at the Court House in Pineville. There is no charge, all are welcome and our speaker this month is Senator Emory Melton who will talk about early county history and formation. You will not want to miss this entertaining and informative presentation. We are also beginning to work on the next calendar, for 2011. There are several possibilities, one is McDonald County Territory "war" as it approaches the 50th year, another is local athletes and ball teams. If you have information reference either of these subjects or a suggestion for another topic, please contact us.
