Benefit for New Bethel School, Sat. Nov. 19 2011 by Karen Almeter
Hi, everybody. Wanted to bring you up to date again about the New Bethel School project.
We were delayed signing the contract on the property, as we decided to have a survey done since the acre with the school had never been separated from the larger acreage on which the old Croddy place sits. Also, we had Bob Evenson, a local attorney, draw up the closing documents (pro bona). In short, the closing was last Monday. We paid $500 down. Fred Hall is financing the balance at $200/mo. at 4% interest for 4 years. We hope to pay it off much sooner, though, with donations and fundraisers.
We've planned a benefit dinner for this Saturday at 6:30 p.m at Banner Church of the Nazarene in Splitlog (2 1/2 mis. west of Hwy. 59 on Splitlog Rd. just north of Anderson). We're planning for 150-200 people. Music will be provided by Crawford & Co. (Canaan Bound), and there will be a pie auction afterward. A massage chair is being provided by one of our members ($1.00./minute for a massage), and there will be a photographer set up to do portraits which will be printed out for people to take home that evening. Charlene Bergen is putting together a slide show of old pictures of alumni of the the school. (If you have pictures, get them to us as soon as possible).
We have many jobs to be done for the benefit. We will be setting up tables and decorating the church (the Life Center) Friday eve. and scrubbing potatoes for baked potatoes for the dinner. We need pies! Randy Cornell will be making the chili for the frito pie. We'll need about four people in the kitchen to set out toppings for the baked potatoes, make tea & coffee and to serve. We'll need a few people to stay and clean up the kitchen and put away tables and chairs.
Also, we may yet need someone to auction the pies.
If you can help in any way, let us know.
Hope to see you there!
-Karen

by Alberta Anders
We are still experiencing a warm glow from all the support of the area, we would like to acknowledge the McDonald County Telephone Company, U. S. Bank, Bob Evenson, Attorney at Law, James Dorrough, Fred Pitts from Joplin, Representative Bill Reiboldt and Representative Bill Lant for their support on our soup day last month. Also we would like to express our appreciation to all that showed up and shared lunch with us. We are also celebrating a letter Virginia Hall received reference the Old McDonald County Courthouse from the Department of Natural Resources. That warm glow just keeps glowing as we learn they have received information provided and "Based on this review, we believe that the property may be eligble for nomination to the National Register.", and as Virginia says, we are on our way. We would like to invite all our readers at this time to join us March 20. At this, our regular, semi-monthly meeting, to be at the new court house on "W" Hwy in Pineville at 2:00 p.m. Dorothy Beauchamp will bring us an inside look at THE 1961 SECESSION OF MCDONALD COUNTY FROM THE STATE OF MISSOURI. A guest speaker, Patty (Stephens) Buck has agreed to come and read her mother's account of the entire three-year event. Jim Stephens was the head of the McDonald Territory Militia. And, that isn't all! We Are On Our Way. If you would like to be a part of this project, check out our Web Page www.mcdonaldcohistory.org/museum.htm. This Saturday our museum, just south of the U. S. Post Office in Pineville will open our regular hours, you are invited, no charge, come by and see all the wonderful contributions. In the meantime, See you Sunday, March 20.

McDONALD COUNTY Historical Society meeting for 16 Jan 2011
Historical Society meeting 16 Jan 2011
Hello All,
It appears the notice of the meeting location change did not come out in the local paper this week. The meeting is going to be at the OLD CITY HALL Building on Harmon Street, just north of the Post Office. The new courthouse where we typically meet is closed due to electrical updates which includes the heating system. We will post signs on the door giving instructions, but please, tell all your friends that plan to attend. I know many of our folks don't have email, so we will also be making phone calls, as well......
Virginia Hall and Jim Tatum will be our speakers.
Hope to see you Sunday!
